New Java Applet Certificate Available
Posted by John Tkaczewski on 01 November 2016 01:30 PM
This news item applies to owners of all FileCatalyst and Unlimi-Tech applets ever published (FileCatalyst Upload/Download/2-way,UnlimitedFTP, U-Upload, U-Download) and also applies to FileCatalyst Workflow.
To provide confidence in using our applets to interface with your filesystem, Unlimi-Tech uses code-signing certificates. These certificates are like “shrink-wrap”, guaranteeing the applet has not been tampered with by a third party. Certificates are renewed every 3 years, and the newest are available as of today, the latest certificate will expire on Sept 29th, 2019
What is a code-signing certificate? I'm sure there are better articles on the web to explain the smallest details, but the general idea is that we use a certificate (much like those used to securely deliver pages over HTTPS) to make sure an applet purchased from us cannot be tampered with. If a third party intercepts and tries to modify the code for malicious purposes, the applet will no longer function. When you use an FileCatalyst or Unlimi-Tech applet, the certificate is our guarantee that it will do nothing harmful to your computer.
Why every 2 years (actually it's 3 years now)? The latest certificate is valid for almost 3 years (untill Sept 29, 2019) The certificate vendor cannot simply issue a certificate for a 'lifetime' guarantee.
