With Windows Vista due for imminent release, we want to advise users of our Java applets of some issues they may encounter. This article will be updated as new information becomes available.
Any user of Windows Vista should upgrade their Java version to Java 6. Currently you can get it at the following URL
http://java.sun.com/javase/6/
and when it is officially released it will be available at
http://www.java.com
.
Most issues are limited to GUI related glitches. However when running IE 7 on Vista with Java 1.4.x or Java 1.5.xyou may also experience inability to download files. This problem does not exist when running Firefox browser.
In addition, Vista has made considerable changes to security, and no longer allows Java applets to save files in folders such as C:\ or other system folders. This does not seem to be an issue with Firefox.
If anyone experiences further issues with Windows Vista and our products we would greatly appreciate your feedback. Please submit a support ticket and we will gladly assist.
Regards,
Chris

By adding the site domain to your list of trusted sites, the applet should execute properly with no warnings or interruptions. To do this, follow these steps:
Under "Tools" menu (on the right side of toolbar), select "Internet Options"
Click "Security" tab
Click "Trusted Sites" checkmark icon
Click "Sites" button
Uncheck "Require server authentication" box, unless you specifically want IE7 to confirm https connection requests
Enter a site domain into the "Add this website to the zone" text field (eg. utechsoft.com)
Click "Add" button
Click "Close" button
Once configured correctly, when you visit a trusted site, you should see the "Protected Mode:" readout in the bottom of the browser showing that Protected Mode is OFF. Any other site will still have protected mode ON.
Java itself has a new version due for imminent release which will fix protected mode issues. It is currently available as a "release candidate" which you may install if your organization permits installation of beta software. The fix will be available in Java Plugin 1.6.0_10 to be released in the upcoming weeks. Here is a link to the BETA version of the Plug-in:
http://www.java.net/download/jdk6/6u10/
fixes the "Protected Mode" issue with applets even if the web site you are accessing is not in the Protect Mode.
The new version of the Plug-in adds a new option in Java Control Panel, under Advanced tab. Once installed, go to the Java control panel (found in Windows control panel, or from the Java tray icon if it is visible), then switch to the Advanced Tab. Expand the "Java Plug-in" item and make sure "Enable the next-generation Java Plug-in" is checked. Apply and close.
Here is some background information on how Sun solved this problem:
A next generation of the implementation of the Java Plug-In has been developed which changes the execution model of applets. Instead of running the applets in a JVM embedded in the web browser's process, they are now run in a separate JVM process which communicates back to the web browser.

Regarding the issue of downloading files using IE7 on Vista. This issue only occurs when the user is logged in using a regular user account and not an Administrator account.
IE has a feature called Protected Mode which disables the browser to download files. Turning this feature off will enable downloading of files through our applets.
Below are instructions on how to turn Protected Mode off.
1. Open up your IE7 browser and locate "Internet | Protected Mode On" which is at the bottom right hand side of the browser.
2. Double click to open up the security settings.
3. Uncheck the Enable Protected Mode checkbox and click apply and then Ok.
4. Close down all open IE7 browsers
5. Load the applet and test downloading.
If this does not work for you or you have any other questions, please feel free to contact us.
Regards,
Elton.
