Fixing Expired Security Certificate or Upgrading Applet
Solution If you are using the Unlimi-Tech applets in standalone form (UnlimitedFTP, U-Upload, UDownload) then this article is for you. If you are using the applets as part of one of our web offerings--FileCatalyst Webmail (Formerly Files2U) or FileCatalyst Web Workflow (formerly Doctera) this article is NOT for you.

Once every so often (every two years to be precise), our applet customers--even those with perpetual licenses--must update their applets. This is because we use digital signatures to guarantee the safety of the applet. One interesting analogy compares this process to the "shrink wrap" of a physical product you might find on a store shelf. By digitally signing, Unlimi-Tech is guaranteeing that when you install our applets, they have not been tampered with.

However, digital signatures, like any other security certificate, must be updated. Although applet functionality is maintained (end-users simply select "Trust" or "Run" from the warning dialog), the certificate itself has expired.

We update these in-house and then roll out new versions of the applets. To get the benefits of the security certificate (and make any browser nag dialogues go away) you need to upgrade your applets with the latest version from the website. If, after upgrading, you are still seeing the nag dialog, please contact Unlimi-Tech in order to have the situation resolved. Identify which of the following scenarios applies to you, and then follow the instructions:

1. I have the current version of the applet and just need the latest certificate

  • Download the latest version from the website. (visit http://www.utechsoft.com/products/ , locate your product, and select "download")

  • Extract the applet .jar file (the only file ending in .jar) from the zip you just downloaded

  • Backup the .jar file on your live instance by copying it to another location or renaming it to something like appletname.jar.bak

  • Copy the new applet .jar file to the appropriate folder on your web server

2. I have the previous version of the applet and just want to update the certificate

We provide signed versions of the previous release of the applets; we always recommend updating to the latest version, but this allows you to update the certificate while planning an upgrade strategy.

3. I have a previous version of the applet, and I want to upgrade completely

  • Optionally update just the certificate as per option #2 above as a temporary measure

  • Download the latest version of the applet from the website. (visit http://www.utechsoft.com/products/ , locate your product, and select "download")

  • Extract the contents of the zip you just downloaded

  • Proceed with a complete upgrade as per this article: Complete upgrade of applets

Note: part of the upgrade to the latest versions was the consolidation of multiple .jar files into just one jar file. Once you are updated to the latest version(s) of the applets, you can delete old .jars if you see fit. However, keeping them in your web directory won't harm anything; it'll just cause clutter.
