HTML Form Upload Improvements Over Links With High Latency

When uploading files to FileCatalyst Workflow or Webmail using the HTML Form Upload, there may be many dropped connections or no connectivity for links with high latency (>300ms). During an upload via HTML form (not the Java Applets) the transfer can sometimes be interrupted with timeouts and restarts or the upload progress status window will not update and will show a Page Not Found or Page Can’t be displayed error.

FileCatalyst Workflow v4.9 and later.

FileCatalyst Webmail v4.9 and later.

The high latency link can be accommodated by adjusting the Web Server timeout settings.

  1. Shutdown the Tomcat Web Server service.
  2. Using a text editor open /<path to tomcat>/conf/server.xml file.
  3. Locate the connector that looks like:

    <Connector port="80" protocol="HTTP/1.1"
    redirectPort="8443" />

  4. Add the following properties to the connector:

    <Connector port="80" protocol="HTTP/1.1"
    redirectPort="8443" />

  5. Save the file and close the text editor.
  6. Restart the Tomcat Web server.

Summary of the properties added:

  • connectionTimeout: The number of milliseconds this Connector will wait, after accepting a connection, for the request URI line to be presented. This was increased to 80000.
  • disableUploadTimeout: This allows the servlet container to use a different, longer connection timeout while a servlet is being executed, which in the end allows either the servlet a longer amount of time to complete its execution, or a longer timeout during data upload.
  • maxPostSize: The maximum size in bytes of the POST which will be handled by the container FORM URL parameter parsing. The limit can be disabled by setting this attribute to a value less than or equal to 0. In this case, it disables the maximum file size.
