Using the Right Amazon S3 Endpoint Region
Posted by Aly Essa on 04 December 2019 11:32 AM

Overview

The FileCatalyst Server uses s3.amazonaws.com as a default endpoint however we have found this may not work for all regions and other clients have witnessed better performance when they have specified a local endpoint.

You can find the specific endpoint from Amazon's KB Article here:

https://docs.aws.amazon.com/general/latest/gr/rande.html#s3_region

Environment

FileCatalyst Server v3.7.2 and newer.

Resolution

Depending on how you have configured access to your storage bucket you will have to modify the configuration using the following:

URL Composition Method

From the Amazon KB link above select the endpoint that you would like to use. For this example, we will use Canada (Central): s3.ca-central-1.amazonaws.com

The default base syntax is s3://<access key>:<secret key>@s3.amazonaws.com/<bucket>/<path>, the modification that would be made here is to the endpoint.

Replace the s3.amazonaws.com with s3.ca-central-1.amazonaws.com:

 s3://<access key>:<secret key>@s3.ca-central-1.amazonaws.com/<bucket>/<path>

The syntax above can be used for the User's home directory, Virtual Folder path and in the User Defaults tab in the FileCatalyst Server Remote Admin.

File Systems Tab

This option has to be configured in the FileCatalyst Server Administration application under the File Systems Tab. Please note, the advanced view must be enabled to access this tab.

From the Amazon KB link above select the endpoint that you would like to use. For this example, we will use Canada (Central): s3.ca-central-1.amazonaws.com

  1. In the File Systems tab edit your current S3 bucket or hit +New.

  2. For the Endpoint field use s3.ca-central-1.amazonaws.com

  3. Fill out your Access Key and Secret Key.

  4. Hit Save.
